Here at ThisIsPizza.com, we don’t really visit restaurants, strictly pizzerias, but when we get a tip about a restaurant that has a great pizza we have got to make an exception
Ovelia in Astoria is one of those places and you’ll see why.

This restaurant is run by the Giannakas family, namely Yiannis and Litsa, and their two sons, Peter and Chris. This family has a passion for cooking and this is evident with the choices they’ve made! Chris dropped out of law school and Peter stopped working on his Ph.D in Microbiology so that they could open Ovelia and focus on what they loved to do: cook and share their delicious creations with the world!
Lets take a little tour of the place! The view from the entrance…

And the view from the back…

The place is painted a cool white and is adorned with artwork!

Including these sexy legs!

So we ordered what we came for: the “Atomik Pizza”. A word play on the Greek “atomiko” which means “for a single person” and “atomic” as in the bomb, and that’s what this pizza is..the bomb
Look at this baby!!!

Served on a cutting board with a knife, this pizza makes a splash on arrival. It is made with Greek pita bread topped with fresh homemade marinara sauce, mushrooms, red and green peppers, kafteri (which is a mash of feta cheese and jalapeno peppers), smoked turkey, Canadian bacon and oozing with mozzarella cheese! The recipe was created by the father Yiannis. He has been cooking for his family for years (Peter recalls his father making him this Greek style pizza as a kid) and has been in the restaurant business for over 35 years! Believe me, Yiannis Giannakas knows how to make your taste buds happy!

Lets cut it!

Each bite was filled with extreme flavor! There was a spicy element from the kafteri and the peppers, mushrooms and meats blended in your mouth and were complimented by the mozzarella to make your mouth explode with flavors. No wonder they named it the “Atomik Pizza”!

Look at how beautiful it looks underneath! The grill marks are perfect!

When you’re in the neighborhood, check out the “Atomik Pizza” at Ovelia. They have one pizza on the menu, but they do it with their own unique Greek twist and it’s phenomenal!
